{"id":731,"date":"2017-02-14T15:28:00","date_gmt":"2017-02-14T20:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hoodresearch.org\/TTR\/?p=731"},"modified":"2026-03-03T15:32:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T20:32:49","slug":"msu-nassar-timeline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hoodresearch.org\/TTR\/?p=731","title":{"rendered":"MSU &#8211; Nassar\u00a0 &#8211; Timeline"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Nassar fired in 2016 from MSU, Allegations that MSU has been receiving complaints about Nassar since 1999 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michiganradio.org\/news\/2017-01-11\/heres-what-msu-allegedly-knew-about-claims-of-sexual-abuse-by-doctor\">link<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/news\/2016\/09\/20\/larry-nassar-timeline\/90733320\/\">Timeline<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a timeline of events involving former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, who also had worked at Michigan State University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>July 8, 2014<\/strong> \u2014 Nassar wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/3111202-Letter-of-Retirement-2.html\">letter<\/a> to the USA Gymnastics Board of Directors saying he is retiring as National Team Medical Coordinator. &#8220;My primary role will now be with the women&#8217;s artistic program for as long as the program feels I can be an asset to them,&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aug. 10, 2014<\/strong> \u2014 Nassar announced in a long <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/3089890-Nassar-2014-Announcement.html\">Facebook post<\/a> that he would leave as National Team Medical Coordinator for all of USA Gymnastics. He said he would stay on as team doctor for women&#8217;s artistic gymnastics &#8220;until at least 2016.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>June 20, 2015<\/strong> \u2014 In another long <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/3089892-Nassar-2015-Announcement.html\">Facebook post<\/a>, Nassar said, &#8220;The summer of 2016 will be my last summer before I step down and no longer travel to competitions.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Summer 2015<\/strong> \u2014 This is the time USA Gymnastics said recently that it reported &#8220;athlete concerns&#8221; to law enforcement and cut ties with Nassar. The doctor disputed that account, saying he left voluntarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sept. 27, 2015<\/strong> \u2014 Three months after saying he would stay through 2016, Nassar wrote a long <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/3100632-Nassar-Sept-2015.html\">Facebook post<\/a>, saying, &#8220;After 29 years on the USA Gymnastics Women&#8217;s Artistic National Team staff, it has come time for me to retire.&#8221; He recounted his career and finished with a list of his honors. But he did not give a reason for retiring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aug. 4, 2016<\/strong> \u2014 IndyStar published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/news\/investigations\/2016\/08\/04\/usa-gymnastics-sex-abuse-protected-coaches\/85829732\/\">lengthy investigation<\/a> into USA Gymnastics and its handling of sexual abuse complaints over decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aug. 14, 2016<\/strong> \u2014 During the Rio Olympics, Nassar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/3104591-Aug-2016-Nassar-on-School-Board-Run.html\">posted<\/a> on Facebook that he retired in September 2015 &#8220;in part to prepare for the HPS School Board of Education election.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aug. 29, 2016<\/strong> \u2014 A Louisville, Ky., woman, Rachael Denhollander, filed a criminal complaint against Nassar with Michigan State University Police. She alleged that in 2000, at age 15, she was sexually abused by Nassar during treatments for lower back pain. Denhollander said she contacted police and IndyStar after reading the Aug. 4 investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aug. 30, 2016<\/strong> \u2014 Michigan State University relieved Nassar of clinical and patient duties during the investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sept. 8, 2016<\/strong> \u2014 A former Olympic medalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/3106054-JANE-JD-COMPLAINT-Signed.html\">filed a civil lawsuit<\/a> in California, alleging sexual abuse by Nassar from 1994 to 2000. The lawsuit also named USA Gymnastics and the organization&#8217;s past three presidents, including current president Steve Penny, for negligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sept. 12, 2016<\/strong> \u2014 An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/news\/2016\/09\/12\/former-usa-gymnastics-doctor-accused-abuse\/89995734\/\">IndyStar investigation<\/a> revealed details of allegations Denhollander and the Olympian that Nassar penetrated the girls with his finger while treating them for hip and back pain. The former gymnasts came forward independently to IndyStar after its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/news\/investigations\/2016\/08\/04\/usa-gymnastics-sex-abuse-protected-coaches\/85829732\/\">Aug. 4 investigation<\/a> into USA Gymnastics and its handling of sexual abuse complaints over decades. Nassar&#8217;s lawyer denied any wrongdoing by the doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sept. 20, 2016<\/strong> \u2014 Michigan State University announced it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/news\/2016\/09\/20\/michigan-state-fires-former-usa-gymnastics-doctor\/90735722\/?hootPostID=0df3b8757dae8705322950fa2f809aca\">fired Nassar<\/a> after the school &#8220;received additional information that raised serious concerns about Nassar&#8217;s compliance with certain employment requirements.&#8221; A school spokesman said the firing was independent of the university&#8217;s criminal and Title IX investigations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Oct. 6, 2016<\/strong> \u2014 Michigan&#8217;s attorney general announced that his office will review accusations against Nassar at the request of Michigan State University Police. If charges are filed, the attorney general said his office would prosecute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nov. 8, 2016<\/strong> \u2014 Nassar lost his bid for election to the Holt School Board. Prior to the election, Nassar said he was withdrawing from the race, but it was too late to get his name removed from the ballot. He came in third place, losing by more than 1,500 votes. He received 21 percent of the vote, which was 2,730 ballots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nov. 21, 2016<\/strong> \u2014 Nassar was charged with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/news\/2016\/11\/22\/larry-nassar-michigan-state-university-child-sexual-assault-usa-gymnastics-michigan-attorney-general\/94280568\/\">three counts<\/a> of first degree criminal sexual conduct with a person under 13 in Michigan state court. If convicted, he would face life in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nov. 22, 2016<\/strong> \u2014 Nassar posted a $1 million bond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dec. 16, 2016<\/strong> \u2014 Nassar was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/news\/crime\/2016\/12\/16\/ex-usa-gymnastics-doctor-arrested-federal-officials-attorney-says\/95532728\/\">arrested again<\/a>, this time on federal charges of receipt and attempted receipt of child pornography. The indictment says that between 2003 and 2016, Nassar possessed \u201cthousands of images of child pornography\u201d with file names such as \u201cpedo-vicky_10_year_old_orgasm\u201d and \u201cKelly 13 young girl.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jan. 10, 2017<\/strong> \u2014 Eighteen women <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/news\/investigations\/2017\/01\/10\/18-women-sue-usa-gymnastics-msu-over-sex-abuse\/96387202\/\">signed onto a civil lawsuit<\/a> that names USA Gymnastics, a high-profile gymnastics club and Michigan State University, claiming the defendants failed to protect them from sexual abuse by Nassar. Since that time, more than a dozen others have joined the civil suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Feb. 7, 2017<\/strong> \u2014 Federal prosecutors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/news\/local\/2017\/02\/07\/feds-nassar-had-computer-files-destroyed\/97612044\/\">charged Nassar<\/a> with another child pornography-related charge, alleging he had images or files destroyed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nassar fired in 2016 from MSU, Allegations that MSU has been receiving complaints about Nassar since 1999 link Timeline Here is a timeline of events involving former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, who also had worked at Michigan State University.
